In cooperation with the University of Texas School of Public Health
(Houston), the ARKGroup conducted cutting-edge
research that establishes the primary connection between a child’s
sense of self-esteem and the quality of his relationships with the primary
adults (parents and teachers) in his life. When a child feels unconditionally
loved for who he is rather than for what he does, he is enabled to value
himself in spite of his imperfections. This gift of unconditional love
is the key to high self-esteem and provides children the inner strength
to withstand the negative peer pressure that leads to anti-social and
self-destructive behavior.
The ARK (Adults Relating to Kids) Program was developed
in response to this research. ARK teaches adults to relate to kids in
caring, supportive ways that enable youngsters to feel valued and loved
and that elevate children’s self-esteem.
